Ben was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Sotero and Josefina Salazar. He has 5 Sisters and 4 brothers

Ben was married to Rose Salazar for 40 years. Rose passed away in 2020. They have a son Daniel who lives in Virginia with wife Tracy.

Career
Graduated from Scottsbluff H. S. in 1963.
Served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, Vietnam Veteran
Graduated from UNL with a BA in Sociology (1973) and UNL Law School JD (1976) and practiced law from 1980-1986 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Moved to Omaha in 1988 and began publishing Nuestro Mundo Newspaper from 1990 to 2010.
Ben has been an advocate for the Latino community ever since.

Ben is the only Latino in Nebraska invited to be a Commencement Speaker at Wayne State College 1998

ADVOCACY

BEN, A MAN FROM THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE

In 1971 Ben was one of 5 UNL Chicano students who organized the Mexican American Student Assn. It recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary.

Worked with the Cesar Chavez Campaign for Human Development from 1976-1977; Arizona Attorney General from 1977-1978;

Represented Social Security Disability applicants with Phoenix Legal Aid 1978-1979;

As a consultant, Ben was the Latino representative for DCHD from 2020 to 2022.

Ben was the community partner for MCC South Express at Vinton Square; Also a community partner for Metro and PACE for their ACT testing center at Metro South;

A consultant to Metro’s Re-entry program and as an advisor on two occasions;

Presently Ben is an advisor to Creighton’s CHW program under Dr. Sade Kosoko-Lasaki.

Ben is an advisor to several non-profit organizations including LPOA; Generation Diamond; CHI/Latino Center CNA program; and numerous S. Omaha leaders and residents.

Ben continues to be an advisor and consultant to many Latino and Spanish-speaking people in S. Omaha and will continue this practice “for as long as I can and people need me.”
